Anti-tank guns are towed anti-tank units designed to destroy armored vehicles from defensive positions. In order to penetrate vehicle armor they fire smaller caliber shells from longer-barreled guns to achieve higher muzzle velocity than field artillery weapons, many of which are howitzers. The higher velocity, flatter trajectory ballistics provide terminal kinetic energy to penetrate the moving/static target's armor at a given range and contact's angle.
Tactics and Gameplay Edit
- Since they are towed units, anti-tank guns are slow and must set-up prior to firing. As a result, anti-tank guns do not much offensive capability, and are more suited to defense; use tank destroyers for attacks and anti-tank guns for defense.
- Anti-tank guns are best placed in forests where they can ambush enemy tanks from afar. When conducting surprise attacks from forests, AT guns gain a firepower bonus. As a result, AT guns in forests can even destroy super-heavy tanks when several are used together.
- When placed in forests, anti-tank guns should be paired with infantry since anti-tank guns cannot attack infantry themselves. Anti-tank guns also perform better when a recon unit is present as the recon unit extends the range at which the AT gun can see enemy units and attack them.
- Avoid placing AT guns in towns as their range is severely hindered here and they can't attack infantry. Instead, occupy town squares with infantry.
- A common tactic with anti-tank guns is to set up an ambush by luring an enemy armored column into the sights of guns, which remain hidden in a forest.
- AT guns are especially in 1942 era, where there are less tanks with level 4 and 5 armor and heavy firepower. As a result, anti-tank guns are more powerful than many tanks.
- Do not let enemy infantry get close to AT guns as AT guns can't attack infantry.
