The Taylorcraft L-2 'Grasshopper' (in-game: Grasshopper) is an aerial Recon unit fielded by the United States from an Airfield. The Grasshopper is faster and more maneuverable than larger aircraft, but has no weapons with which to defend itself. While ground recon units like the Willys are limited in both their speed and range, the Grasshopper can survey an enormous section of enemy territory in a very short time.
In 1941, the United States Army Air Corps ordered four Taylorcraft Model Ds under the designation YO-57. That summer they were evaluated during maneuvers in Texas and Louisiana where they were used for purposes like troop transport and serving as a courier. General Innis P. Smith coined the name 'grasshopper' after witnessing a particularly bumpy landing of one of these planes.
