Wehrmacht Infantry Division
Gott mit uns, für das Vaterland!
Grenadiers are the backbone of all German infantry armies. Well-equipped and disciplined, they are more than capable of engaging on other infantry and light vehicles. Grenadiers can be upgraded into Sturmgrenadier later in the game. The grenadiers in-game are wearing Volksgrenadier clothes but with better experience and firepower than the Volksgrenadiers.
Grenadiers were professional infantry troops within the Wehrmacht, and were one of the most heavily armed troops in the world, and thanks to their equipment, they were very versatile, able to adapt to any situation thanks to their training, due to this, there were many different types of Grenadiers, each with different duties.
There were Panzergrenadiers, who were tasked with escorting and supporting tanks wherever they were needed, then there were Volksgrenadiers who were fanatical (or conscripted) militia, mainly used as reserves or final defense within town, and then there were Pioniergrenadiers, who were combat engineers.
Grenadiers in WWII were motorized infantry (contrary to popular belief, only the elite grenadiers were ever Mechanized, Mechanized infantry received an armed and armored transport) which made them able to be transported to the location which they were needed. However, being heavily-armed, they were extremely slow on-foot.
After WWII, many countries abandoned the methods of using independent infantry battalions, and made all of their basic infantry mechanized infantry, present-day armies of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria call their infantry divisions "Panzergrenadier" divisions, and are still some of the most heavily armed infantry in the world.
