A threat to infantry, light vehicles and aircraft, the M15 Contraereo made use of quad 20mm Breda machine guns on a Carro M15 chassis. Its advanced suspension made it exceed its theoretical top speed, and had the same great cross-country performance. Escorting other armor is advised, as it can protect the armor from intense aerial attacks. But its very light armour can't hold out, and it needs to be protected by heavier units.

History[]

Based on the chassis of the M15/42 Italian medium tank, the M15 Contraereo was an anti-aircraft variant designed for mobile and/or stationary use. Literally, 'Contraereo' means 'anti-aircraft,' hinting its uses. Only two prototypes were ever constructed, being under the designation 'Scotti-Isotta Fraschini 20/77 Mod. 1941.' The first of the prototypes was sent to Tunisia for field testing, the other remained in Italy until being captured by the Germans after the Italian surrender. The M15 Contraereo in Tunisia was left behind during the hasty Italian and German retreat from Northern Africa. Also, the only crews that had ever operated the M15 Contraereo in Tunisia were intercepted by English cruisers on their way back to Sicily and the Italian mainland, leaving many of the designers without feedback as to how the prototype operated.
