Sturmgrenadiers are one of the best infantry units within the game (along with the Legionnaires and Gvardiya), even though they're not capable of killing a lot of the heavy infantry of other factions (let alone the two stated above) they have the best anti tank weapon, the Panzerschreck, which can be useful in large-scale conventional combined-arms frontal assaults, since you won't need to hide them to blow nearly any tank to pieces.

The Sturmgrenadiers in the game are closely related to the German Waffen-SS units and uses the same equipment with them.

History[]

Panzer grenadiers

German panzergrenadiers in the Soviet Union, August 1942. The combat vehicle in view is the SdKfz 251 armoured half-track.

Sturmgrenadiers were infantry units who specialized in leading assaults. German armoured infantry during WWII (or Panzergrenadiers since 1942) were tasked with escorting tanks and assisting them with assaults, from urban warfare, to large-scale operations,

Sturmgrenadiers were typically battle-hardened and experienced professional soldiers, as fearlessness added into shock value. They were given better weaponry and were trained in carrying out assaults, from melee to marksmanship skills.

As the war went on, Nazi Germany began to lose faith in chances of victory during the war, and once the USSR stepped in, all hope was lost. Sheer numbers overwhelmed the German offensive to Stalingrad, and were pushed all the way to Berlin, the heavily armed grenadiers of the Wehrmacht were then filled with conscripted citizens, in the end Nazi Germany began abandoning perfectionism within infantry forces to make up for mass production of other factors (such as Armor and Artillery, due to the repeated heavy shelling of Berlin) and in the end used fanatical militia as their final urban defense.

It is unknown whether the Sturmgrenadiers were used for either the Waffen-SS or the Heer Army (or both), but one thing that can be said is that they were dangerous shock troops.

Overview[]

  • Placing these units in forests close to roads to guard your flank, along with laying ambushes in city squares works effectively.
  • Utilizing a single Sturmgrenadier unit, when able to lay ambushes, can hold off an entire armored column.
  • As they are slow to produce (slowest producing infantry in the game) it is advised that you use them wisely and often with support of other units like the Panzer III.
