The Willys MB US Army Jeep (in-game: Willys) is a motorized Recon unit fielded by the United States. It has a wide perception area, and can be hidden in both Woods and Cities. However, like most recon units, a Willys has no weapons, and must rely on its speed and stealth to avoid conflict, or it will be annihilated by any offensive unit, due to it's paper-thin armor. Willys Jeeps are cheap to construct, costing only $5 to build, as opposed to the usual cost of $10-$30 for equivalent units from other factions.
The real-life Willys MB was manufactured between 1941 and 1945 as a joint effort between the Willys and Ford motor corporations as a response to a needed replacement for the US Military's aging motorcycles and side-cars, which made up the majority of the existing light motor vehicles. The Willys is considered the 'iconic' war jeep, and after the war, was converted into a civilian 'CJ' model which was manufactured between 1953 and 1968.
Originally, the first 25,000 Willys Jeeps were made with welded flat iron 'slat' radiator grilles. It was Ford that suggested the now-familiar stamped-and-slotted steel grilles, which proved to be lighter, cost less resources, and was easier to manufacture. Even now, the Jeep Motor Company maintains this connection to its origins by manufacturing the distinctive radiator grilles with a set number of slots. Through a lengthy history of purchases, corporate take-overs, and the like, AM General Corporation ended up with the rights to use the seven-slot grille, which it in-turn extended to Chrysler when it purchased the entire AMC Jeep line in 1987.
In 1991, the Willys-Overland Jeep MB was designated an International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmarkby the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
